Because it's a slow bearing tree and difficult to pollinate, Warren Pears rarely make it to the commercial market. Farmer Al of Frog Hollow Farms in Brentwood, California, has really beaten the odds - not only cultivating Warrens commercially but growing them organically. A hybrid of Giant Seckel and Magness Comice pears, they're heavy and juicy like Comice but more elongated in shape with heavily russeted, brown-gold skin. Farmer Al describes them as smooth with a grit-free texture and an intense, complex flavor with hints of guava, pineapple and honey. Their honey-sweet, slightly spicy flavor and copious juice make them great for baking into pies and tarts, for poaching and for serving with salads and cheese.
